Women's Tennis Fends Off Push From Hamilton In 5-2 Win

CLINTON, NY (April 5, 2025) -- The No. 7 nationally ranked Tufts women's tennis team continued its strong spring season with a commanding 5–2 win over No. 51 Hamilton on Saturday afternoon at the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. The Jumbos improved to 11–2 overall and 3–1 in NESCAC play, showcasing their depth and poise in both singles and doubles.

Tufts set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches, securing the crucial point to grab early momentum. The No. 1 pairing of Natalie Hu and Stephanie Woodbury held off Hamilton's top duo with a 7–5 win, while the No. 2 and No. 3 teams—Sophie Wax/Ryan Wurhman and Ellie Gershaw/Nikki Kintiroglou—delivered similarly clutch 7–5 and 6–2 victories, respectively.

Carrying that doubles energy into singles, the Jumbos continued to dominate. Junior Lucy Mitchell delivered a decisive 6–2, 6–3 win at the No. 2 spot to clinch the win, while sophomore standout Natalie Hu added another point at No. 4 with a 6–2, 6–3 performance, completing a perfect day in both singles and doubles.

Mitchell is now 7-2 on the season this spring, while Hu evened her season mark at 5-5.

Nikki Kintiroglou added a win for Tufts with a gritty straight-sets triumph at No. 5, outlasting Hamilton's Shannon Cicero in a pair of nail-biting tiebreaks (7–6 (4), 7–6 (4)). Kintiroglou is now an impressive 7-2 in singles this year while adding an unblemished 6-0 record in dual matches this spring.

Sophomore Sophie Wax also came through at No. 6, prevailing 6–4, 6–4 in a steady, composed effort. She is now 6-1 this spring, posting wins at the No. 1, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 spots.

Despite dropping matches at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, the Jumbos' team depth proved too much for the Continentals. The win marks another strong step forward for Tufts as they gear up for the heart of NESCAC competition.

Tufts will be right back in action Sunday afternoon in Amherst, MA, battling Amherst College at noon in league play.
