LUDLOW, MA (April 6, 2025) -- The No. 7 Tufts University women's tennis team battled back in singles' play but couldn't overcome the doubles' point deficit as the Jumbos fell to host No. 13 Amherst College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play from Ludlow Tennis Club.
Tufts (11-3, 3-2 NESCAC) battled during doubles' action, as first-year
Brooklyn Bindas and
Athena Li rallied at No. 3 to earn a 7-5 victory to move to 3-1 in dual matches this season. In the top spot,
Natalie Hu and
Stephanie Woodbury played an epic match against Deliala Friendman and Lily Dounchis but the Mammoth pair outlasted the Jumbos 7-6 (5).
First-year
Ryan Wuhrman and senior
Sophie Wax were topped at No. 2 in a close match-up, 6-4.
In singles play, first-year
Melanie Woodbury picked up her team-high 12th victory of the season at No. 1 as she bested Dounchis 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 (5). Tufts also earned wins at the bottom of the line-up, as first-year
Athena Li defeated Tina She with a come-from-behind win of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Hu was also a singles' winner at No. 6, as she topped Greta Stechschulte 7-6 (3), 6-3 for her sixth win of the season. Tufts also had near misses at No. 2 and No. 3, as
Rachel Cranley was topped in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to Friedman at the third spot. Junior
Ellie Gershaw also fell 7-6 (4), 6-2 at Amy Cui at the No. 2 spot.
Tufts will now come home for the next four matches, starting the home stand with a NESCAC match against Trinity College Friday, April 11 at 1 p.m. for Team Impact Awareness Day at Voute Courts at the Tufts Tennis Center.
