LEWISTON, ME (April 9, 2025) -- The No. 2 Tufts University women's lacrosse scored four goals in the first 3:13 Wednesday afternoon at Bates College, building a 14-2 lead at the halftime intermission to cruise to a 18-6 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) win in play from Garcelon Field.
The Jumbos (12-0, 7-0 NESCAC) scored on their first two shots of the contest as junior
Elsa Schutt opened the scoring just 32 seconds into the game with her 10th of the season. 30 seconds later, junior
Allie Zorn continued to add to her goal total on the year with an assisted tally to make it 2-0. Tufts would get two more goals from
Caroline Conaghan and
Madeline Delaney to make it 4-0 at the 11:47 mark of the first.
Zorn would add on two more scores in the first eight minutes of the game, followed by another by Delaney to make it 7-0 at 5:33 of the opening stanza. Bates would net its first goal of the game at 3:29 of the first quarter, but senior
Margie Carden tallied off of a
Schuyler Lloyd feed to make it 8-1 after 15 minutes.
The goals would continue in the second quarter, as Carden started a 6-1 second-quarter run just 36 seconds into the frame to make it 9-1. Delaney notched back-to-back goals to put the running clock into motion, and two late goals from sophomore
Grace Hammond made it 14-2 at halftime. The two teams would play an even 4-4 in the second half, but the big first-half lead was plenty for the Jumbos to up their season-opening win streak to 12.
Delaney led all players in goals on Wednesday with four, adding three draw controls as well, while Zorn tallied four points on three goals and an assist. Sophomore
Sophia Claps tallied a career-high three goals, while Carden added three scores as well along with a ground ball. Carden now has 283 points on her career, as the all-time points leader at Tufts.
Senior
Ella Lesperance added four assists, and
Caroline Conaghan and Schutt each had a goal and assist.
Senior attack
Kate Mastrobuono finished with a team-high four ground balls on Wednesday, and
Sadie Dodson and
Neta Leschly each had two loose ball pick-ups as well.
Genna Gibbons continued to dominate the draw circle with a team-high 10 on Wednesday, adding a caused turnover. Senior
Pascale de Buren made one save in the first half of action, while
Sophie Powless also had two stops in the fourth quarter for Tufts.
Tufts outshot their hosts 42-18 for the game, including a 29-6 shots on goal edge. Tufts also led 19-8 in draw controls while finishing 2-of-7 on free-position shots.
Grace Cassin had two goals and an assist for the Bobcats (7-6, 3-5 NESCAC).
The No. 2 Jumbos will now look forward to its biggest test of the season on Saturday, April 12, traveling to No. 1 Middlebury College at noon for a battle of unbeaten teams in Middlebury, VT.
