GENEVA, OHIO (May 22, 2025) - The Tufts University women's track and field team performed well in their first day of action at the 2025 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva Ohio on Thursday.
Kicking off the day for the Jumbos was the sophomore javelin thrower
Jackie Wells. She started the day well, landing a 34.47m toss on her first attempt, before stepping up on her second attempt and tossing the javelin 37.98m. The sophomore was unable to improve that mark on her third attempt, and finished the event in 16th place. It was a great finish to the season for the sophomore that broke the program record in Javelin just a week prior.Â
Up next on the schedule was the long jump featuring a pair of talented Jumbo jumpers, senior
Jordan Andrew and first-year
Elysse Cumberland. Andrew was up first in flight one, and landed a jump of 5.55m to take 18th place, putting her four places ahead of her initial seed. Cumberland took over for Andrew in flight two, and landed a big 5.81m jump on her first attempt. From there, she was unable to improve her mark, despite landing three more jumps of more than 5.70m. The result was enough to earn fifth, the best result for Tufts on the day.
Rounding out the first day of competition for the Jumbos was first-year
Arielle Chechile in the 400m hurdles. The rookie took off in heat one, finishing third in her heat in 1:01.37. She finished fourth place overall in the preliminary round of the event, earning herself a spot in the final on Saturday at 3:25 pm.
Cumberland's four points for fifth-place in the long jump scored four team points for Tufts, leaving them in a tie for 19th place at the end of day one.
The Jumbos will continue the NCAA Championships with senior
Harper Meek and first-year
Makayla Moriarty in action in the high jump and 400m dash respectively. Meek is up first in the high jump at 11:30, and Moriarty hits the track in lane eight of heat one at 3:15 pm.
