WORCESTER, MA (May 3, 2025) - Extremely windy conditions impacted the New England Rowing Championships (NERC) on Lake Quinsigamond today. Though the morning heats were completed, most of the finals were canceled in the afternoon due to unsafe rowing conditions.
The Tufts men competed in finals for the first varsity eight and the first varsity four. Jumbo second, third and fourth varsity eights and the second varsity four were in afternoon finals that were cancelled as conditions worsened.
The Jumbos easily qualified for the 1V8 grand final with a second-place time of 6:19.448 in their heat. They were well ahead of third-place U.S. Coast Guard Academy (6:30.105). MIT was in front of the Jumbos by a length with a 6:15.304 mark to win the heat. In the grand final, as conditions worsened, Tufts' 7:24.150 mark was behind first-place Trinity College (7:10.517), second-place Wesleyan Univeristy (7:19.984) and third-place Bates College (7:23.192). The Jumbos were ahead of Williams College (7:27.426) and MIT (7:34.030).

A men's varsity four straight final was also held. Tufts' team of coxswain

Brendan McHugh rowed a 8:18.776 to place as runner-up. They were behind the University of Massachusetts (8:12.784) and in front of the University of New Hampshire (8:49.425), Middlebury College (8:50.103) and Gordon College (10:01.827).
In the second varsity eight second heat, Tufts timed 6:28.486 for second place and a spot in the grand final. The Jumbos were behind Wesleyan's 6:21.606 finish. For the 2V8, coxswain

For the 3V8, the Jumbos advanced to the grand final with a 7:12.739 finish that beat out MIT (Division 1 in men's rowing) who were at a 7:17.991 time. Williams College won the heat with a strong 6:57.816 finish. The Jumbo team was coxswain

Straight finals in the fourth varsity eight and men's second varsity four were canceled.
Due to the number of canceled races, the Points Trophy which is typically presented at NERC was not awarded this year.
Tufts will return to Lake Quinsigamond for the National Invitational Rowing Championships next Sunday (May 11). The NESCAC Championship will also be part of the regatta.
