WENHAM, MA (September 16, 2025) - The Tufts University women's soccer team made the trip to Gordon College for a Tuesday-evening nonconference match against the Fighting Scots, coming away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory after the dust settled.
The Jumbos (4-0-0) took to the game well, with sharp passing and strong defense as most have come to expect from the brown and blue. The Scots (2-4-0) blocked up the Tufts attack with five defenders across their back line, making themselves a nuisance as the Jumbos tried to maneuver towards goal.
Freshman
Jordyn Miller set the tone with a crisp shot from inside the penalty area. It was swallowed up by the opposing goalkeeper, but with the first shot on goal coming just five minutes into the game, it was clear the Jumbos offense was firing on all cylinders.
Sophomore
Maren Jones checked in with her first goal of the season in the 28th minute. It came off of a perfect cross from pressure by senior
Elsi Aires, leaving Jones with just the finish as she was left wide open in the penalty area. Jones' first goal of the year gave the Jumbos a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
The Jumbos came out for the second half ahead, but their advantage soon withered away after the Scots came out of the gates hot. A shot through traffic from just outside the penalty area beat a diving Tufts goalkeeper,
Greta Steege, tying the game for the home team.
With plenty of time on the clock, the Jumbos showed no signs of stress. They tightened up their defense and found their rhythm on offense, allowing them to work back into the deeper areas of the Gordon half.
With 20 minutes left, the Jumbos found themselves with a chance as they had numbers going forwards.
Jordyn Miller swerved past her mark, finding senior
Waverly Sumner in the center of the pitch. A deft flick with the outside of her foot found
Caroline Kelly in stride, giving her just the goalkeeper to beat. She fired an unstoppable shot into the bottom right of the goal, giving the Jumbos a 2-1 lead.
The Jumbos would hang on as the Scots became desperate in the final minutes of the game, helped by some great defending by senior
Lena Sugrue, claiming victory in their second straight road match ahead of their return to Bello Field this weekend.
That return will be on Saturday, September 20 at 11:00 am as the Jumbos not only head back to Medford but also return to NESCAC play hosting Hamilton.
