Tessa Lozner scored a career-high 24 points Friday night, while classmate
Abby Congdon recorded her first career double-double but it wasn't enough as the Tufts University women's basketball team fell to host Williams College 67-63 in overtime in action from Chandler Gymnasium Friday evening in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action.
Neither team led by more than eight during the contest, which was tied 10 times while the contest also featured nine lead changes.
The Jumbos (7-8, 0-3 NESCAC) came out fast and led by as many as eight in the first half, as an
Abi Stone lay-up with 9:34 to go in the second quarter made the score 22-14 in favor of the visitors. Williams would respond with a 11-1 run over the next five minutes to take the lead at 25-23 after a Kathleen Smith bucket. Williams surged ahead by five at 30-25, but the Jumbos clawed back to make it a two-point deficit at 32-30 at the half.
Congdon and Lozner each had 12 points to pace the Jumbos through 20 minutes.
In the second half, Tufts surged back and regained the lead on a 7-0 run capped by a lay-up from sophomore forward
Siobhan Stapleton. Williams would pull back ahead, eventually leading by three going to the fourth quarter. Neither team led by more than one possession in the fourth quarter, as the Ephs (8-7, 2-1 NESCAC) took a one-point edge with 2:22 to go to make it 59-58. Nearly two minutes later, Lozner got to the line with a chance to take the lead, but hit one of two to tie the game at 59.
Tufts would force an offensive foul on the next possession, and a shot just before the buzzer would not fall as the game went to overtime. In the extra session, Tufts would never lead as the Jumbos committed four turnovers in the frame in dropping the nail biter. The Jumbos have now lost four straight, but by just 27 total points with three of the losses by a combined 11 points.
Lozner was efficient from the floor Friday evening, going 8-of-13 overall and 2-of-4 from three-point land, while adding five boards and three steals.
Congdon pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds in addition to her 19 points, and Stone chipped in 10 points and six rebounds off the bench. Sophomore
Claire Kolkhorst tallied four points and six rebounds as well, as Tufts shot 37.7 percent (23-61) on field goals Friday.
Williams got a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds from Smith, while Micah Walton tallied 13 points as well.
The Jumbos head to Middlebury College Saturday at 3 p.m. in NESCAC play in Middlebury, VT.
