Cold Shooting Dooms Women's Hoops In Loss To Connecticut College

MEDFORD, MA (January 24, 2026) -- The Tufts University women's basketball team shot just 25.5 percent from the floor Saturday against Connecticut College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play, falling to the visiting Camels 55-38 inside Cousens Gymnasium on National Girls & Women in Sports Day.

The Jumbos (9-9, 1-4 NESCAC) led for the majority of the first quarter, taking a 7-2 lead with five minutes left in the first frame after a lay-up from first-year Abby Congdon. Congdon would finish with a team-high 12 points in the loss.

Connecticut College rallied back to take a 10-9 edge just before the first quarter intermission, pushing its edge up to as many as 10 in the second frame after a lay-up by Sofia Tavarez with 3:04 to go in the opening half. Tufts scored the final six points of the half though, as Congdon had four more points to make it a 27-23 Camels lead going to the break.

After halftime the Jumbos pulled even at 31 with 2:18 to go in the frame after a three-point play by first-year Tessa Lozner, but Connecticut College surged ahead before the buzzer of the third to take a 37-33 lead after a Catherine Cole triple at the horn.

The fourth quarter would be all Camels, as Tufts wouldn't score for the first 7:05 of the frame while tallying just five points in the closing stanza as the visitors pulled away for the win.

The final shooting percentage for the Jumbos was a season-low, while the two made three-pointers were also the fewest this season for a Tufts squad. The Jumbos 38 points were also the fewest since a 57-30 loss to Trinity College back on February 10, 2024. It was Connecticut College's first win in Cousens Gymnasium since Febraury 24, 1996.

Congdon added seven rebounds to her 12 points and two steals, while Lozner added 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. No other Jumbo had more than five points, as Abi Stone finished with at that total while chalking up a team-high eight rebounds. Tufts was 14-of-55 from the floor Saturday, but turned the ball over just eight times.

Tavarez had 20 points to lead all scorers, and Sydney Marshall had a double-double of 12 points and 12 boards in the win.

Tufts is off until January 30, traveling to Wesleyan University for a 7 p.m. tip-off with the Cardinals in Middletown, CT.
