MEDFORD, MA (October 10, 2026) – The No. 3 ranked Tufts University women's soccer team continued their unbeaten record and captured their fourth straight victory in a 2-0 NESCAC shutout over the Panthers of Middlebury College this afternoon on Senior Day.
The Jumbos (7-0-2, 5-0-2 NESCAC) put one on the board in each half and controlled the pace of play to collect the two-goal win. The Panthers (3-2-4, 3-2-2 NESCAC), had their fair share of chances, but could not find a way to squeak one past
Gigi Edwards.
The Panthers applied their offensive attack early on in the contest, tallying two corner kicks and two shot attempts, with one reaching goal, within the first four minutes of play. However, the Tufts defense stood tall and refused to allow nay threatening opportunities.
The Jumbos did not register their first shot attempt until nearly 24 minutes into the match, with an off-target rip coming from
Maren Jones. Jones missed out wide again in the 27th, before burying her fourth of the season to give Tufts a one-goal advantage.
Maggie Rogers sent in a beautiful ball from near the midfield line and found an open Jones in the box for an easy score.
Entering halftime, the Jumbos held a slight five to four lead in the shot department, while Middlebury lead five to zero in corner kick chances. Edwards went into the break with two saves.
Middlebury came into the second half with an attacking mindset and put together their best scoring chance of the match just over seven minutes into the final 45. After a foul, a Panther defender delivered an accurate ball into the box from midfield and Taya McClennen steered a shot towards the bottom right hand corner of the goal, but Edwards made a diving save to keep the Jumbos ahead.
Waverly Sumner put the Jumbos on top by two at the 56:45 mark, scoring her team-leading sixth goal of the season. From beyond midfield,
Emily Nicholas fed a pretty through pass down the right sideline for Sumner, Sumner took two dribbles and fired a tough angle shot over the head of the Panther goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
Tufts was able to coast the rest of the way to the clean sheet victory. Edwards ended her fourth shutout of the season with four total saves, while
Maile Lung and
Phoebe Marsick saw the full 90 minutes of action for the Jumbos.
The Jumbos are back on home turf Monday for a non-conference contest against Rivier University at 2 PM.
