OWINGS MILLS, MD (March 14, 2025) The top-ranked Tufts Jumbo men's lacrosse team extended their remarkable run Saturday afternoon, defeating No. 2 Christopher Newport 17-9 at Mustang Stadium to secure the program's 35th consecutive victory at the 2026 Callum Robinson Mustang Classic at Stevenson University.
Tufts improved to 5-0 on the season while Christopher Newport fell to 9-2 in a match-up between the nation's top two teams. After trailing early, the Jumbos used a dominant second-quarter surge and a decisive fourth-period explosion to pull away in the marquee showdown.
Christopher Newport jumped out to the early advantage in the opening quarter. Jamie Smith opened the scoring at the 13:40 mark before Jackson Shaw added another goal just over two minutes later to give the Captains a 2-0 lead. Tufts responded late in the period when Brooks Hauser finished a feed from Logan Lee with 3:17 remaining, and Garrett Kelly tied the game just 48 seconds later with an unassisted strike to even the contest at 2-2 heading into the second quarter.
The Jumbos took control in a high-scoring second period. Jackson Redd and Jack Regnery scored just 36 seconds apart early in the quarter to give Tufts its first lead at 4-2. Christopher Newport briefly battled back to tie the game at 4-4 after goals from Jude Maclean and Randolph Campbell, but Tufts answered with a critical offensive run. Hauser ignited the surge with a goal at 6:14 before Nick George, Davis Owens and Will Emsing all found the net in the final minutes of the half. The late push gave Tufts an 8-5 halftime lead.
Tufts continued to extend the margin in the third quarter. Regnery opened the scoring off an assist from Redd at 13:50 to make it 9-5. The Captains stayed within reach thanks to goals from Smith and Maclean, trimming the deficit to 9-7 midway through the period, but Regnery struck again with 3:09 remaining to restore a three-goal cushion as the Jumbos entered the final quarter leading 10-7.
The fourth quarter belonged entirely to Tufts. Hauser opened the period with a man-up goal, and Chase Beyer followed with back-to-back tallies less than 40 seconds apart to spark a decisive scoring run. Kelly added another extra-man goal before Regnery capped his big afternoon with his fourth goal of the game at the 6:33 mark.
Tufts continued to pour it on late as William Bonner and Peter Kraemer also scored during the seven-goal fourth quarter that stretched the lead to 17-7.
Christopher Newport added a pair of late goals from John Santoro in the final minute, but the outcome had already been decided as the Jumbos secured the statement victory.
Regnery led the Tufts offense with four goals and one assist, while Hauser added three goals, and Kelly and Beyer each scored twice. Nine different Jumbos found the back of the net in the balanced offensive effort. In goal, Jack Old made 15 saves to earn the win, Cole Friedlander had a team-high three caused turnovers, and Bonner had a standout performance with two caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Victor Salcedo had six grounder as he went 6-for-13 at the "X", while Lucas De la Paz was 8-for-12 with five ground balls on draws. Harrison Stockdale also had three ground balls as well.
Smith paced Christopher Newport with two goals and one assist, while Shaw and Maclean also scored twice. Ryan Miller finished with three assists for the Captains.
Tufts finished with advantages in shots (49-39) and face-offs (16-14) while converting two of four extra-man opportunities.
The Jumbos are off for seven days before battling Trinity College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) contest in Hartford, CT at noon.
