Tufts Baseball Holds Off UMass Boston With Strong 7-3 Victory

MEDFORD, MA (March 24, 2026) – The Tufts University baseball team improved their win streak to three games with a 7-3 victory over the Beacons of UMass Boston in non-conference action on a cold sunny day at Sol Gittleman Park.

The Jumbos (11-2, 0-0 NESCAC) began the game with Mark Herlihy on the hill. In his second start of the season the junior could not find his rhythm, allowing three runs on five hits through 2.1 innings pitched, while striking out two batters. Max Williams made his first appearance at home as a Jumbo in relief of Herlihy in the top of the third inning.

UMass Boston reached the scoreboard first in the opening frame to take an early 1-0 lead. Elliot Miles sent a long ball over the left field fence with a measured 106 MPH exit velocity to put the Beacons ahead.

The away squad put two more runs on the board in the top of the third to boost their advantage the three. Nick Farnacci singled to right field followed by a single into left by Miles. Both base runners advanced into scoring position on a double steal and scored off of a pair of walks and a fielder's choice.

Tufts stayed resilient and tied the game at three in the bottom half of the third inning. Jesse McCullough led off with a single up the middle, giving the senior at least a hit in five of his last six games. Malcolm Whitfield reached first and advanced McCullough to second on a hit by pitch. Caden Abraham brought Whitfield and McCullough home a two-run double down the left field line to make it a 3-2 game. James Henshon kept the hitting going as he singled into center field, advancing Abraham to third. Abraham then scored to tie it on a fielder's choice double play RBI ground out from Tate Bannish.

The Jumbos took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Whitfield notched his second hit of the day with a lead off double into right center field. Bannish grabbed his second RBI of the day with a single into center to send Whitfield home.

Mitchell Hwang replaced Williams with two outs in the bottom of the top half of the fifth after a strong debut performance at Sol Gittleman Park. Williams finished with 2 strikeouts no runs allowed on no hits in 2.1 innings of production. Hwang (3-0) earned his third win of the season with 3 strikeouts and no hits or runs allowed through 2.1 innings of action.

Tufts tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to push their lead to four. Whitfield (2-for-4), Abraham (2-for-4), Henshon (2-for-4), and McCullough (2-for-4) each collected two hits apiece in the contest. Abraham held a team-high three RBIs with two doubles.

The Jumbos will open conference play on Friday as they travel to Bowdoin College for a 3 PM contest.
