BRUNSWICK, ME (March 29, 2026) – The Tufts University baseball team took two losses in a doubleheader matchup against Bowdoin College in NESCAC play at Pickard Baseball Diamond this afternoon.
The Jumbos (12-4, 1-2 NESCAC), gave
Emmet Christian the nod to start Game 1 for his third start of the season. The sophomore held the Polar Bears to just one run through 4.2 innings of play on three hits while whiffing four batters. Christian pitched a complete game with a line of four strikeouts, one walk, and two earned runs allowed on four hits in 6.0 innings pitched in his first loss of the spring.
In a low scoring battle, Tufts reached the board first in the top of the second inning.
Max Pavlik singled up the middle and then tagged out at second on a fielder's choice play by
AJ Lysko. Lysko advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from
Tom Pender to give the Jumbos a 1-0 lead.
Bowdoin scored a run in the bottom of the third to knot the game at one. Will Cooke opened the inning with a single into center field and advanced to second on a passed ball. Reuben Siegel then ripped a single up the middle to score Cooke.
The Polar Bears grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the fifth frame. Siegel reached first on walk and scored from second base after an RBI single the left side of the infield from Liam Foley.
Jackson Melendy and Will Bordes were dominant on the mound for Bowdoin in Game 1, They allowed just one run on four hits while striking out five Jumbo batters and walking just one in 7.0 innings of combined production to give the Polar bears their first conference win of the season.
In Game 2,
Michael O'Brien began the contest on the hill for Tufts for his fourth appearance of the year. The junior was relieved by
Mark Herlihy after 2.0 innings of work. Herlihy put together a solid 6.0 innings of dealing, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out two Bowdoin batters.
The Polar Bears stormed out to a 9-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning to put the Jumbos on their heels early. In that inning, Foley hit a grand slam. Bowdoin added on another run in the bottom of the third inning to make it a 10 run deficit for the Jumbos.
The Jumbos put two runs on the board in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 10-4.
Jack Kamin reached on a triple into left field and scored from an RBI double by
James Henshon. Henshon then crossed home on a double from
Tate Bannish. In the fifth,
Owen McKiernan led off with a single through the left side of the infield and scored on and RBI ground out from
Malcolm Whitfield. Pender, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning, scored on an RBI single from Kamin.
Bowdoin tacked on two more runs in the final three innings to bring their total to 12.
AJ Seidel nabbed his first collegiate-career hit and RBI with a single through the left side of the infield to bring home McKiernan and make the final score 12-5.
Tufts returns to Sol Gittleman Park on Tuesday against Rhode Island College at 3:30 PM!
