Men's Tennis Continues Hot Run With 7-0 Sweep of Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, VT (April 12, 2026) --  In a statement road performance against a top-20 opponent, the No. 2 Tufts University men's tennis squad delivered a commanding 7-0 sweep of No. 18 Middlebury College on Sunday afternoon at the Outdoor Tennis Courts in Vermont, improving to 15-2 on the season.

The sweep of Middlebury was the first in program history, while the win in Vermont for Tufts is their first since 2022 and only the fourth all-time. Tufts has now won nine straight matches overall.

The Jumbos seized control early by sweeping all three doubles matches, setting the tone for the afternoon. At the top spot, the pairing of Sacha Maes and Alex Ganchev turned in a dominant 6-2 victory, while Andrej Djokic and Kaetan Mehta followed with a solid 6-4 win at No. 2. Maes and Ganchev improved to 4-0 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play this season, while earning their team-best 11th victory together.

The most competitive doubles contest came at No. 3, where Javier Gonzalez and Stavros Mastrogamvrakis edged out Middlebury's duo in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-3), to complete the doubles sweep and hand Tufts a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. Gonzalez and Mastrogamvrakis are now 5-0 together this spring.

From there, Tufts' depth proved overwhelming, as the Jumbos captured all six singles matches in convincing fashion. Kaetan Mehta was first off the court at No. 5, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory, quickly followed by Eren Cheung at No. 6, who matched that dominance with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Mehta has now won six straight and is 10-1 on the season, while Cheung won for the second straight time out.

Sacha Maes extended the lead with a composed 6-2, 6-3 result at No. 4, putting Tufts firmly in control. Maes is now 10-2 this spring, winning his last five matches overall while improving to 4-0 in NESCAC action.

At No. 2, Alex Ganchev secured the match-clinching point with a strong 6-1, 6-4 performance, continuing his impressive day after contributing to the doubles point. Garv Bahl added another straight-set victory at No. 3, battling through a competitive second set to win 6-4, 7-5.

Bahl is now an impressive 15-3 in singles this season, winning his last eight, while Ganchev chalked up his 11th straight victory on Sunday.

The highlight of the afternoon came at the top singles position, where Javier Gonzalez outlasted Middlebury's Julian Wu in a dramatic three-set battle. After dropping the opening set 5-7, Gonzalez responded with a 6-3 second set before edging a tightly contested match tiebreak, 9-7, to cap the sweep in thrilling fashion.

Tufts will travel to Connecticut College and Colby College Saturday, April 18 at noon in NESCAC action.
