SPRINGFIELD, MA (May 1, 2026) – Sophomore
Elysse Cumberland won the long jump with a season-best mark, helping the Tufts University women's outdoor track & field team take the lead after day one of the New England Division III Championships at Springfield College on Friday.
The Jumbos, who won the New England Division III Indoor title back in March, are the defending New England D3 outdoor champions. They scored 37 points today in the first six events of the meet to lead second-place Connecticut College (36) by a point. Third-place MIT has a 32 score.
With her victory today, Cumberland sweeps the New England Division III long jump after winning the event indoors. She went 5.94m (19'5 ¾") today to edge Johnson & Wales junior Aliyah Wilson (5.93m – 19'5 ½"). Cumberland's mark improves her national ranking from 14th to third as of Friday evening.
The Jumbos also received a pair of runner-up finishes in the throwing events today. Junior
Jackie Wells had a 40.59m (133'2") best in the javelin throw for second out of 21 entries. Classmate
Ceci LaBarge, who won the conference title in the hammer throw last weekend, was second in the event for New England Division III today with a 52.39m (171'11") PR. The mark improved on her #3 all-time ranking at Tufts and moved her up to #13 in the nation as of Friday night. First-year
Isabella Romero also delivered three sixth-place points with her season-best in the javelin, a 38.35m (125'10") that ranks her fourth all-time at Tufts now.
Junior
Lena Tang also earned a strong third-place finish in the pole vault today, clearing 3.46m (11'4 ¼") to earn six team points for the Jumbos. Senior
Eliana Montgomery contributed a fifth-place finish in the 10,000 meters today with her 40:14.28 time.
Tufts first-year
Eleanor Lewis also started in the heptathlon on Friday. She's in seventh place with a score of 2184 points, highlighted by her season-bests in the 100-meter hurdles (16.69) and the 200 meters (28.70). She was tied for third in the field with a 1.49m (4'10 ¾") high jump.
Also in action today, sophomore
Cameron Stanton ran a 16.08 PR in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles. Senior
Amelie Wickham just missed scoring in the pole vault, where her 3.16m (10'4 ½") was ninth.
Day two of the New England Division III meet at Springfield begins at 9:30 AM on Saturday.
