WORCESTER, MA (May 10, 2026) – The Tufts University men's rowing team won grand finals in the second and third varsity eights, was third in the fourth varsity race and placed fourth in the first varsity grand final on Sunday at the National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) at Lake Quinsigamond.
The Jumbos earned third place in a very tight Points Trophy competition, which is awarded for the best overall success at the NIRC. Wesleyan University and Trinity College tied for first in points at 192, with Tufts a close third at 191 points. The Jumbos also earned a varsity four victory today, which does not count in the points standings.
The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship was contested today, as part of the first varsity competition. In an all-NESCAC 1V8 grand final, the Jumbos were fourth behind 2026 conference champion Wesleyan University, runner-up Trinity College and third-place Williams College.
In first varsity racing, Tufts had earned its spot in the grand final by placing second in the first heat with a 6:28.855 time. The Jumbos then covered the 2000-meter course in a 6:22.544 time in the grand final. Conference champion Wesleyan won with a 6:10.420 mark, while Trinity's second-place was earned with a 6:11.640 time.
The Jumbo second varsity had a strong victory today, defeating Williams and Trinity in the grand final. The Jumbos had been second behind the Bantams last weekend in the New England Rowing Championships 2V8. Today, Tufts won its heat (6:29.750) over Wesleyan, and then took the grand final with a 6:24.442 finish. Williams was second in the race (6:27.458) and Trinity third (6:30.554). The 2V8 win at NIRC was Tufts' second in the last three years.
Tufts also won the 3V8 today for the second time in the last three years at NIRC. Their 6:29.366 edged Wiliams in the heats, and then Tufts won the grand final with a 6:29.670 mark ahead of second-place Trinity (6:33.190).
The Jumbos had a pair of boats in the men's varsity four contest today. Both teams won their heats, with the Jumbo A four timing 7:33.101 and the Tufts B squad at 7:40.455. They then went 1-2 in the grand final, with the A four winning with a 7:33.596 finish, and the B team second in a 7:39.900 time. Eleven total teams started in the event.
In the fourth varsity race, a straight final, the Jumbos placed third with their 6:43.247 time. They were behind 4V champs Wesleyan (6:36.387) and second-place Trinity (6:40.603).
The Jumbos will now wait on the announcement of at-large berths into the upcoming Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships, which will be made on May 19.
