Baseball's Season Comes to a Close After a Pair of Losses On Day Two of NCAA Regional

MEDFORD, MA (May 16, 2026) – The Tufts University baseball team saw their stellar season come to an end after a pair of losses in games four and five of the NCAA Tournament Regional against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Kean, respectively.

Game 4 vs. CMS (L, 5-2)

For the Jumbos (31-11, 8-4 NESCAC), Cole Donato earned the start in game four against CMS. The senior ace had a solid day with four strikeouts and four earned runs allowed on nine hits in eight complete innings on the hill.

Tegin Maloney was the starting pitcher for CMS, and he delivered a complete game with seven strikeouts and two earned runs on seven hits to keep the Jumbos offense quiet.

The Stags struck first in the opening inning with a run a take a quick 1-0 advantage. Rider Gordon rocketed a home run over the left field fence, giving CMS their 95th team homer of the season which ranks second in the nation behind Johns Hopkins (96).

Claremont doubled their lead to two with a run in the top of the fifth. Blaise Heher was hit by a pitch to lead off and advanced to second on a passed ball. Heher moved to third from a Jett Shue single and a sacrifice fly ball from Bryce Didrickson brought Heher home.

The Jumbos were able to bring the lead back down to one after scoring a run in the bottom half of the inning. Cole Bohane opened the frame with a single through the left side of the infield and later scored from second off of an RBI double down the left field line from James Henshon.

The Stags pushed their lead to four with three runs in the top of the eighth to put the Jumbos on their heels. Shue, Didrickson, and Gordon each touched home in the inning for the Stag tallies.

Maloney forfeited a run in the bottom of the ninth, but was able to keep the Jumbo bats tamed as he finished off the game to help CMS earn a 5-2 win.

Game 5 vs. Kean (L, 11-6)

In game five, the Jumbos faced off against the Cougars from Kean University and Michael O'Brien took the bump as the starting arm for Tufts. The junior was strong at the start, holding the Cougars scoreless in the first three innings and allowing two hits.

Kean stunned the Jumbos with six runs in the top of the fourth to break the game open and take a 6-0 lead. Jude Clough led off with a double to left center field and scored after a Dan Reistle RBI single up the middle. Resitle moved to third after a single from Tyler Stone and scored on a fielder's choice that saw all runners safe. Stone then reached home following a Dominic Masino single into right field. JT Abrusci, Brett Hilsheimer, and Masino racked up the remaining runs in the barrage.

The Cougars posted four more runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 10-0 advantage. Abrusci (1), Nick Sellari (2), and Justin Teixeira (1) registered the RBIs in the frame.

Tufts showed resilience and fight as they scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and three runs in the bottom of the ninth to bring their deficit to within five before the final out ended the Jumbos season with an 11-6 final result.

The Jumbos say thank you to the six seniors that are set to leave after today's losses. Ending their collegiate-careers as NESCAC Champions and hosts of an NCAA Regional with a 31-11 overall record.
