MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA, MA (May 9, 2026) - The No. 3 Tufts men's tennis team began their NCAA Division III Championship campaign with a 4-0 blanking of Baruch College in the second round of the tournament. The match was moved to the Manchester Athletic Club after the outdoor courts at the host site in Medford were rained out.
The Jumbos and Bearcats had only faced off once before, meeting three years ago in the second round of the NCAA Tournament when the Bo's earned a 5-0 victory under the old NCAA format, which featured nine total points rather than the current seven. Last week, the Jumbos won their first New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship in 37 years and continued to capitalize on that momentum with a dominant start in the NCAA Tournament.
Tufts got to work immediately in doubles, securing the first point just 21 minutes after the match started. Stavros Mastogamvrakis and
Javier Gonzalez were the first duo to finish, beating Joshua Bey and Anlact Huynh 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.
Andrej Djokic and
Kaetan Mehta found themselves down 2-1 to Sam Park and Ryan Huang at No. 2 doubles before ripping off five straight games to win the set 6-2 and clinch the doubles point.
Sacha Maes and
Alex Ganchev were leading 4-1 at No. 1 doubles when the match was abandoned.
Gonzalez was the first Jumbo to finish in singles at No. 1, beating Juan Mendoza 6-1, 6-2 and snapping a two-match losing streak. Maes delivered the third point for the Jumbos after defeating Joshua Bey 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Djokic clinched the match for the Bo's after taking down Park 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. The Jumbos were leading at all other singles spots when the match was clinched, and those contests were abandoned.
Tomorrow at 12 p.m., the Bo's will take on the No. 17 Trinity (Texas) Tigers. The two teams will meet for the first time ever with a trip to Chattanooga and the NCAA Quarterfinals on the line. Trinity received an at-large bid to the tournament after narrowly losing the Southern Athletic Association Tournament final to Sewanee, 4-3. Despite their 13-8 record, Trinity owns notable wins over WashU, Case Western, and Mary Washington, which helped secure their spot in the field. Trinity advanced to face Tufts after beating the No. 35 TCNJ Lions in the second round of the championships.
