Matt Malone was promoted to interim head coach of the Tufts University men's basketball program in January 2021 following the retirement of Bob Sheldon. Also the assistant athletics director for facilities and event operations, Malone has been with the Jumbos for 15 years.
Most recently the associate head coach of the team, Malone was an assistant on head coach Bob Sheldon's staff since 2006-07. He started as a student assistant and emerged as Coach Sheldon's right-hand man helping to oversee all aspects of the program.
In 2019-20, Malone and the Jumbos won the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship and advanced to the NCAA "Sweet 16" before the tournament was canceled due to COVID. The Jumbos finished with a 23-6 record - tying the school record for victories - and featured NESCAC Player of the Year Luke Rogers.
In 2016, Coach Malone helped the Jumbos to the verge of the NCAA "Final Four." Tufts hosted NCAA Regional and Sectional games at Cousens Gym and reached the "Elite Eight" before losing. Tufts finished the year as the #9 ranked team in the D3hoops.com national poll. In the 2016-17 season, the Jumbos advanced to the NCAA "Sweet 16" and finished with a 22-7 record and the #10 D3hoops ranking. For a three-year stretch fron 2015-18 Tufts posted a 62-22 record.
A 2007 Tufts graduate, Malone has worked for the Athletics Department at his alma mater since graduating. He was promoted to assistant athletics director in September 2016 after serving as manager of facilities, fields, and game management since 2013. In this role, Malone coordinates the updating, maintenance and use of all athletics facilities and fields at Tufts. He also organizes and directs the management of all home events on campus.
During his time at Tufts, Malone has held other roles including assistant men's golf coach, assistant equipment room manager, and as a student worker for the facilities department.
