Senior tri-captain Meghan McCooey did not lose
a set in singles or doubles play

CAMBRIDGE -- In their opening dual match of the 2009-10 season,
the 10th ranked Tufts University women's tennis team utterly
dominated #25 MIT on Friday afternoon, winning by a 9-0 score. In
the nine matches, Tufts lost just two games.
Coach Kate Bayard's team won five out of the six singles matches
by 6-0, 6-0 scores. The shutout winners were senior tri-captain
Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI) at #2, first-year
Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) at #3, first-year
Lindsay Katz (Owings Mills, MD) at #4, junior
Edwina Stewart (London, England) at #5 and
first-year Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) at #6.
The only Tufts player to lose a game was junior #1 Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY), who was a 6-1, 6-0 winner.
The #1 player in the Northeast at the end of the 2008-09 season,
Browne defeated MIT's Anastasia Vishnevetski, the 23rd ranked
Northeast player.
The Jumbos were just as sharp in doubles play on Friday. Browne
and McCooey at #1 and senior Erica Miller (Boca Raton,
FL) with Katz at #2 both earned 8-0 victories. The #3
tandem of Lam and Hollender scored an 8-1 victory.
Tufts (1-0) opens their home schedule on Sunday when they host
Babson College at 10 am. MIT (1-2) hosts Clark tomorrow at 1
pm.
