NORTHAMPTON -- The Tufts University volleyball team won the 2009
Hall of Fame Invitational Gold Bracket championship with a
three-set win over NESCAC rival Williams College on Saturday
afternoon. Tufts had defeated local foe MIT, 3-0, in the
semi-finals earlier on Saturday.
For the 18th edition of the tournament, which was hosted by
Smith College and Mount Holyoke College, the 16 teams were ranked
based on their results thus far this season. They were then broken
up into two eight-team brackets. The top eight squads competed in
the Gold Bracket at Smith, while the next eight played in the
"Silver Bracket" at Mount Holyoke. NESCAC's Middlebury
won the Silver Bracket.
After defeating Smith in four sets on Friday night, the Jumbos
rolled through MIT (25-17, 25-15, 25-23) and Williams (25-20,
25-21, 25-20) on Saturday.
Tufts senior co-captain and setter Dena Feiger (Long
Grove, IL) was selected as the Tournament's Most Valuable
Player. The Jumbos improved to 25-2 overall. It was their third
victory of the season over Williams, the defending conference
champion. The Ephs now have a 15-8 record.
Against the Engineers, junior Dawson Joyce-Mendive
(Minden, NV) had 17 kills to lead Tufts. Junior
Caitlin Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) finished with
13 digs to go with six kills. First-year Brittany Neff
(Culver City, CA) continued to block well with a solo and
three assists.
In the Williams match, Feiger finished with 45 assists in the
three sets. Three Jumbo hitters finished with double-figures in
kills, as Joyce-Mendive had 15, Updike recorded 13 and senior
co-captain Brogie Helgeson (Santa Cruz, CA)
finished with 10. An excellent Tufts defensive effort was fronted
by sophomore libero Audrey Kuan's (Los Altos, CA)
21 digs and 13 each by Feiger and sophomore Cara Spieler
(Santa Barbara, CA).
Tufts finishes off the regular season next weekend with the
final conference contests against Trinity and Amherst. The Jumbos
are currently first in the league and will be looking to clinch the
#1 seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament.
