MEDFORD - After winning the first set in dominating fashion, the
Tufts University Jumbos stumbled and fell in defeat, 3-1 (14-25,
25-23, 25-14, 25-22), to the Endicott College Gulls in non-league
women's volleyball action on Wednesday evening at Cousens Gym.
In that first set, the Jumbos led the entire way, with their
largest advantage being 13 at 21-8. Once Tufts took a lead of seven
at 15-8, Endicott never got any closer as the lead fluctuated
between seven and 13, until the Jumbos finished the set with junior
Cara
Spieler's (Santa Barbara, CA) kill and senior Caitlin
Updike's (Manhattan Beach, CA) service ace
Tufts held an early lead in the second set, but it never grew to
more than two. The Gulls forced a tie at 8-8 and then they jumped
ahead for good, building a lead of as many as seven. Endicott held
a 23-18 advantage when Tufts made a run. Junior Audrey Kuan
(Los Altos, CA) notched three consecutive aces to pull the Jumbos
within two, but Endicott was able to seal the set by tallying two
of the final three points.
Endicott would dominate the third set much like the Jumbos did
in the first. Tufts never led and there were no ties as the final
margin, 25-14, was the largest lead of the set for the Gulls.
The Jumbos looked as if they were going to force a fifth and
final set as they led the fourth through 41 points. Endicott never
let the Jumbos pull away though, as the largest deficit the Gulls
faced in the set was five. After tying at 21, Endicott scored three
straight to go up 24-21 and eventually take the set, 25-22, and the
match, 3-1.
Senior Kelly
Engelking (Westborough, MA) led the Jumbos in defeat with 11
kills. Updike added eight kills, while first year Michaela
Sinrod (Corte Madera, CA) was solid with 47 assists. Spieler
led Tufts with 13 digs. Engelking, Updike, and Nancy
Shrodes (Manhattan Beach, CA), along with injured teammate
Dawson Joyce-Mendive (Minden, NV) were recognized on Seniors Night
prior to the match.
The Gulls were led by the 15 kills and 10 digs of senior
Brittany Phillips (Sudbury, MA) and 22 digs from sophomore Ashley
Norley (Sudbury, MA). Junior setter Sarah Allshouse (Berthoud, CO)
had 36 assists and four blocks, while junior Elyse Barbour
(Greenville, RI) added 11 kills.
With the loss in their final home match of the season, the
Jumbos now stand at 16-7 overall. They finished the NESCAC season
last weekend with a record of 7-3. Tufts will compete in the Hall
of Fame Invitational in western Massachusetts this weekend
beginning with a match Friday at 7 pm against Brandeis. Endicott is
now 17-12 on the season and will take on Connecticut College on
Saturday at 1 pm.
