SOUTH HADLEY - The Tufts University volleyball team opened play
at the Hall of Fame Invitational with a 3-1 victory over Brandeis
University on Friday night at Mount Holyoke College. The Jumbos are
the #4 seed in the Hall of Fame Gold Bracket, while the Judges are
the #5 seed.
Tufts will now face #1 seed Middlebury College on Saturday at
noon in a match to be played at Smith College. The Panthers
defeated Tufts 3-1 at home on October 9.
The Gold Bracket features other New England teams enjoying fine
2010 seasons such as #2 seed Amherst, #3 Springfield, #6 Bowdoin,
#7 Wellesley and #8 MIT. Coach Cora Thompson's Tufts team is
playing to improve its NCAA Tournament resume.
The set scores for the Tufts-Brandeis match were 22-25, 25-23,
25-20 and 25-22. Senior All-American candidate Caitlin Updike
(Manhattan Beach, CA) led Tufts with 19 kills, with support from
junior Cara Spieler (Santa Barbara, CA) who had 10 kills and a
team-high 22 digs. Making the second start of her career, first
year setter Michaela Sinrod (Corte Madera, CA) had 43 assists, six
service aces and seven digs.
Tufts improved to 17-7, while Brandeis dropped to 13-12.
