MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Williams women's tennis defeated Tufts 6-2
in a non-league fall match-up between two of the Northeast's best
teams on Saturday afternoon at Wesleyan University. This is the
first time Williams and Tufts have met since last spring's NCAA
Round of 16, where the Ephs came from behind to defeat the Jumbos
5-4.
The Jumbos opened impressively, with a #1 doubles win by senior
Julia
Browne (Old Brookville, NY) with first year Shelci
Bowman (Dallas, TX). They knocked off Williams' top doubles
pair of Nicole Reich and Kristin Alotta by an 8-6 score.
On the third doubles court, Caroline Capute and Kathleen Elkins
won Williams' first point of the day 8-2. The #2 doubles match was
the last to finish, taking nearly two hours to complete, and
Williams' Taylor French and Nancy Worley prevailed 9-7 against
Jumbo sophomores Lindsay
Katz (Baltimore, MD) and Janice Lam (San
Francisco, CA).
In singles play, Reich at #3 was the first to finish, beating Edwina
Stewart (London, ENG) 6-1, 6-1 to clinch a second point for the
Ephs. Capute was the next Eph to finish, making the score 3-1 in
Williams' favor, with a three-set win over sophomore Lauren
Hollender (Newton, MA) in fourth singles.
Defending NCAA Singles Champion Julia Browne won the #1 singles
match 6-0, 6-1 against Alotta. Combined with Elkins' #5 win for
Williams over first year Samantha
Gann (Massapequa, NY) in a tie-breaker made the score 4-2
Williams. Kara Shoemaker won the fifth point in the #6 match,
securing Williams' victory.
The #2 singles match was unable to finish due to darkness.
Both teams compete in the NEWITTS starting on October 15th.
