AMHERST -- After giving up the first two goals of the game, the
ninth-ranked Tufts University men's lacrosse team scored the next
12 on their way to a convincing 18-8 victory at Amherst College in
the season and NESCAC openers for both squads on Saturday
afternoon.
Tufts (1-0) got goals from 12 different players while routing
the Lord Jeffs in the season-opener for the second straight year.
The Jumbos won a 15-6 game last season. Coach Mike Daly's Jumbos
have now won seven straight in the series, dating back to 2004.
They were led on Saturday by junior Ryan Molloy's
(Setauket, NY) two goals and two assists. Amherst (0-1)
senior tri-captain Rob Denious scored three goals.
The Lord Jeffs jumped out of the gate, winning the first two
face-offs of the game and scoring impressive goals. Just 47 seconds
into the first, Amherst sophomore Alex Fox (Garden City, NY) beat
Tufts goalie Steven
Foglietta (Oceanside, NY) with a shot. After winning
the ensuing face-off, sophomore Evan Redwood (Lutherville, MD) had
his pass from behind the goal deflected by Foglietta, but scooped
up the ground ball and dove in for a wrap-around score.
After just 1:36 of the first period, Amherst held a 2-0 lead
over the top-ranked team in New England. The Jumbos responded
emphatically, scoring eight straight goals to finish the first
quarter with an 8-2 lead. Tufts used a balanced attack to take over
the game. Seven different players scored during the run, while
junior Brian
Donovan (St. James, NY) put in a pair of goals in the
frame.
During the second quarter, Tufts scored the only four goals of
the period. Sophomore Kevin
McCormick (Laytonsville, MD) had a goal and an assist
during the period. Amherst goalie Steve Levy (Plandome, NY) made
six saves in the second, but the Jumbos put 14 of their 16 shots on
goal during the stanza. At the half, the Jumbos held a 12-2
advantage.
The third quarter saw the Lord Jeffs come out and hold the ball
for nearly a five-minute possession to start the period. With 10:10
remaining in the period, Amherst rookie Jeff Izzo (Plandome, NY)
scored his first collegiate point on an unassisted tally. Izzo's
goal was the lone score of the quarter, as Amherst held its own in
the period.
In the fourth quarter, the Jumbos scored four of the first five
goals, taking a commanding 16-4 lead on Molloy's goal with 7:13 on
the clock. Amherst scored four goals in the final 5:07 of the game,
including a trio of tallies from Denious.
The Jumbos received three points from each from senior
Patrick Devine (Braintree, MA) and McCormick. The
Jumbos scored three extra-man goals in the game, while holding the
Lord Jeffs to a one for 10 performance with the extra man. In his
first collegiate start, Foglietta made 10 for the Jumbos. He had
four in the opening period. Senior tri-captain Mike Droesch
(Setauket, NY) scooped up four ground balls along with
scoring two goals. Senior Doug DiSesa
(Wynnewood, PA) finished with two goals and three ground
balls.
Rookie Brian McFeeley (Essex Fells, NJ) and Luke Arnold
(Lincoln, MA) had a goal and an assist each for Amherst. Levy made
nine saves.
Tufts opens its home schedule on Tuesday (Mar. 16) at Bello
Field against Lasell at 3:30 pm. The Lord Leffs play at Eastern
Connecticut on Tuesday at 4 pm.
