MEDFORD -- The Colby College women's lacrosse team scored the
last four goals, and six of the last seven, to overcome a
three-goal deficit in the final 16 minutes for an 11-9 victory at
Tufts in a NESCAC contest under beautiful conditions at Bello Field
on Saturday afternoon.
Senior tri-captain Amy Campbell (North Andover, MA) had two
goals and an assist as Colby scored six times late in the game to
go from trailing 8-5 to winning and remaining unbeaten (4-0, 2-0
NESCAC). She led the Mules overall with four goals and an assist
for five points, and junior Sarah Warnke (Lakeville, CT) was
excellent in goal with 11 saves. Tufts, which dropped to 0-2 in the
league and 1-2 overall, received three goals and two assists from
senior Emily Johnson (Yarmouth, ME).
The Jumbos had a 7-3 lead four minutes into the second half. In
the first 30 minutes, Johnson had scored two free-position goals
for the Jumbos and senior co-captain Jenna Abelli
(Framingham, MA) also scored twice as the hosts took a 6-3
advantage into intermission. The margin might have been more, but
Warnke stopped seven shots in the Colby cage.
After Tufts sophomore Casey Egan (Massapequa,
NY) scored her second of the game at 26:08 of the second
half, the Mules began to take over. Junior Anne Geraghty (Westford,
MA) came off the bench and scored two of her three goals to pull
Colby within 8-7 with 13:15 on the clock. Johnson's third goal put
Tufts up 9-7 with 10:47 remaining, but back-to-back goals by
Campbell at 9:23 and 6:16 tied the score at 9-9. First-year Kate
Pistel (Amherst, MA) followed with the game-winner at the 5:05
mark.
Tufts controlled the ensuing draw and earned a free-position
shot, but Warnke saved it. Both teams fumbled with possession over
the next few minutes, but Colby was able to control the ball and
get Geraghty's third goal of the game with just 56 seconds
remaining.
Sophomore Claire Donegan (Great Falls, VA) finished the game
with a goal, an assist, three ground balls, and three caused
turnovers for Colby. Senior Caroline Duke (Englewood, CO) scooped
up three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Campbell added two
draw controls to her offensive production.
Sophomore Emily Pillemer (Arlington, MA) played
a solid game on defense for Tufts, contributing two ground balls
and two caused turnovers to go with three draw controls. Abelli
finished the contest with three goals and an assist, along with two
ground balls. Junior goalie Sara Bloom (Summit,
NJ) finished with five saves.
Both teams head out of region during spring break next week.
Tufts plays Buffalo State in Troy, New York on Wednesday (Mar. 24)
