MEDFORD -- After five straight conference matches, the Tufts University women's tennis team played their first non-league match of the month and defeated Brandeis University 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Voute Courts. Coach Kate Bayard's squad has now defeated five of its last six opponents by 9-0 scores.

Tufts improved to 10-3 overall with the victory, while Brandeis fell to 8-8. The Jumbos are ranked 17th and Brandeis is #28 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll released today.

The Jumbos only gave up three games in doubles play against Brandeis. The #2 pair of first years Lindsay Katz (Owings Mills, MD) and Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) won by an 8-0 score. At the top of the order, junior tri-captain Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and senior tri-captain Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI) defeated Brandeis's top pair by an 8-1 score. At #3 doubles, junior Edwina Stewart (London, ENG) and first year Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) rolled to an 8-2 victory.

Katz in #3 singles and Hollender in the #6 match both did not lose a game. Lam at #5 surrendered just two games, while Brown and McCooey lost just four games in their #1 and #2 matches, respectively. Stewart won on the fourth singles court 6-3, 6-2.

Tufts hosts Wellesley College on Friday afternoon before welcoming #2 in the nation Williams College on Saturday. Brandeis plays in the University Athletic Association Championships this weekend (Apr. 16-18) at Case Western.
