MEDFORD -- The Tufts University women's tennis team completed
its non-conference schedule for the 2009-10 season with another
decisive 9-0 victory against Wellesley College on Friday afternoon
at the Gantcher Center. Coach Kate Bayard's Jumbos have now won
seven straight matches, including six by 9-0 scores.
Tufts (11-3) received an 8-0 win in second doubles from the
first year pairing of Lindsay Katz (Owings Mills,
MD) and Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA).
They have now won seven straight together and have a 9-3 record
this spring. The #1 duo of junior Julia Browne (Old
Brookville, NY) and senior Meghan McCooey
(Cumberland, RI) rolled along to their 18th victory of the
2009-10 season by an 8-3 score. Junior Edwina Stewart
(London, ENG) and first year Lauren Hollender
(Newton, MA) were 8-5 winners at #3 against Wellesley's
Meghan Stubblebine and Alice Kate Cummings in the closest match of
the afternoon.
The Jumbos dominated singles, not losing more than six games in
any of the matches. Hollender won by 6-0, 6-0 scores for the third
straight match at #6. Lam won her fifth consecutive match, 6-1 and
6-0 on the fifth singles court. Browne, the top ranked singles
player in the Northeast, won 6-1, 6-1 in the #1 match. Katz lost
just three games in third singles.
The Jumbos return tomorrow for a huge test against two-time
defending national champions Williams College. The match, likely to
be played indoors again at the Gantcher Center, begins at 1 pm.
Wellesley (12-11) is off until April 24 when they play at The
College of New Jersey.
