MEDFORD -- In a match that was closer than the final score
appears, the second-ranked Williams College women's tennis team
earned a 7-2 victory at #17 Tufts on Saturday afternoon in a
marathon match played indoors at the Gantcher Center. The Ephs,
two-time defending NCAA champions, win their conference opener and
improve to 10-2 overall. The Jumbos lost for the first time in
eight matches, falling to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in the league.
The visiting Ephs came out of the doubles matches with a 2-1
lead. The Williams pair of Grace Baljon and Taylor French, ranked
sixth in the Northeast, upset the Jumbos' #1 in the region duo of
Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and
Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, RI) 8-3. On the other
hand, the Tufts first year pair of Lindsay Katz (Owings
Mills, MD) and Janice Lam (San Francisco,
CA) defeated the #11 doubles team in the Northeast,
Williams' Kristin Alotta and Nikki Reich, in an exciting 9-8 (5)
final. The third match went to Williams' Caroline Capute and Lucy
Marchese, 8-5.
In the first singles match, #1 in the Northeast Browne rolled
past #4 Baljon by 6-2, 6-2 scores. Alotta, #9 in the region, won a
hard-fought second match against #18 McCooey in three sets. Reich,
ranked 14th regionally, won the #3 match over Katz, including a 7-6
(5) tie-breaker in the second set. In another competitive match,
Marchese defeated Tufts junior Edwina Stewart (London,
ENG) 6-2, 7-5 at #4.
The Jumbos face another challenge at home on Tuesday when they
host #1 in the nation Amherst College. Williams is at archrival
Amherst tomorrow.
