MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- In a NESCAC showdown between two national top
20 programs, the Tufts University women's tennis team earned a
closely contested 6-3 victory at Middlebury College on Saturday
afternoon. The win stops a two-match losing streak for Tufts, which
improves to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the league. Middlebury lost its
second straight to fall to 12-3 overall and 4-2 in NESCAC.
After the Panthers took two out of three in doubles, Tufts
overcame the deficit by winning five of the six singles matches.
Four of the singles matches included a total of five set
tie-breakers, with the Jumbos winning four of them.
Middlebury won at second and third doubles to begin the match,
including an 8-0 final at #3 where first years Leah Kepping and
Brittney Faber were outstanding. Jumbos Julia Browne (Old
Brookville, NY) and Meghan McCooey (Cumberland,
RI) prevented a doubles sweep for Tufts with an 8-4
victory at #1.
In an outstanding #1 singles match between Browne, the #1 ranked
player in the Northeast, and Middlebury's Tori Aiello, ranked #11
in the region, Browne persevered to win two set tie-breakers 7-6
(6) and 7-6 (7). Junior Jumbo Edwina Stewart (London,
ENG) had a 7-6 (7) second-set tie-break win on the fourth
singles court after taking the first set 6-4. First year
Lindsay Katz (Owings Mills, MD) and sophomore
Jennifer LaCara (Huntington Station, NY) both won
relatively easily in straight sets for Tufts at #3 and #6,
respectively.
The lone Middlebury singles win fame from first year Alexandra
McAtee at #2, though it also included a 7-6 (5) second set.
Tufts plays its regular-season and conference final at home
against Bowdoin next Saturday (May 1) at 11 am. Middlebury will do
the same on that day at Amherst beginning at 1 pm.
