MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The 17th ranked Tufts University women's
tennis team shut out Wesleyan in a NESCAC match on Wednesday
afternoon in Connecticut. The win was the Jumbos' third consecutive
9-0 victory against a conference opponent since they returned from
their spring break trip to Florida.
The Jumbos rolled through the singles matches, including six 6-0
victories. Junior Edwina Stewart (London, ENG)
posted a pair of shutouts in the #4 match. Junior tri-captain
Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) at #1, first
year Lindsay Katz (Owings Mills, MD) in #3
singles, and first year Lauren Hollender (Newton,
MA) in the #6 match all lost just one game in their
matches. Senior tri-captain Meghan McCooey (Cumberland,
RI) was a 6-2, 6-0 winner in the #2 match. Sophomore #5
Jennifer LaCara (Huntington Station, NY) won
easily as well.
The #3 doubles tandem of Hollender and Stewart had earlier
engaged in the most competitive of the three doubles matches. They
outlasted Wesleyan's Casey Simchik and Taylor Morales 9-7. The #1
pair of Browne and McCooey were 8-1 winners. The first year team of
Katz and Janice Lam scored an 8-4 victory on the second doubles
court.
Coach Kate Bayard's Jumbos improved to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in
the league. They sit atop the league standings early in the NESCAC
season. They'll host Trinity on Friday afternoon for the Bantams'
first conference match. Wesleyan's loss was only its second of the
season, as they dropped to 9-2 and 1-2 in the conference. The
Cardinals host Middlebury on Saturday.
