BOSTON - Freshman outside hitter Corrine Porter (Huntington
Beach, CA) came up with a career-high 22 digs and added 10 kills
for her fifth double-double of the season to lead the University of
Massachusetts Boston women's volleyball team over visiting
nationally-ranked number 25 Tufts University, 25-21, 25-22, 26-24,
this evening at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass
Boston.
The victory marked the 300th career win for UMB Head
Coach Terry Condon, who also earned wins for California State
University Bakersfield and Texas A&M University in addition to
108 for UMass Boston. She now owns a 300-170 (.638) career
mark. The Beacons, who received 43 votes in the most recent
Division III American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll,
win their sixth straight match to improve to 13-1 overall for their
best start in school history, while the Jumbos' 10-match win streak
comes to an end as they fall to 10-3.
UMass Boston owned a 22-20 margin in the third and final set,
before Tufts reeled off four straight points on the service of
sophomore setter Kendall
Lord (LaJolla, CA) to give them set point at, 24-22, but the
Beacons came right back with four unanswered points on junior
setter Cassy Hanneman's (Denver, CO) service to take the set and
the match, 26-24. Freshman right side hitter Stephanie Glogovsky
(Wadsworth, IL) came up big with two of the final three kills,
including the game-winner and junior outside hitter Ariel
Aizenstadt (Mission Viejo, CA) gave the home team the lead at 25-24
with her only kill of the night.
UMass Boston owned a 22-16 lead in the first set when 2009
All-American middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) suffered
an ankle injury to keep her out of the remainder of the
match. Tufts put together a 6-2 run to pull to within 24-22
before the Beacons took the set, 25-22.
The Beacons owned an 11-7 lead early in the second set, but
Tufts later evened the match at 15-15, before UMass Boston went on
an 8-2 run to take a 23-17 lead. The Jumbos closed to within
24-22, before the Beacons took the middle set, 25-22.
Porter added three aces and a block solo to her night for UMass
Boston, while junior middle hitter Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, MA)
contributed with seven kills on a .294 hitting percentage to go
with a match-high three block solos and a dig. Hanneman ended
the night with 18 assists, 12 digs, a pair of aces and a kill,
while Glogovsky put down five kills and scooped up a pair of
digs. Sophomore libero Bethany Rossoll (Denver, CO) helped
stabilize the defense with 12 digs and added a pair of aces.
Senior outside hitter Caitlin
Updike (Manhattan Beach, CA) led Tufts with 10 kills in
addition to four digs and a block assist, while Lord set for 18
assists, swung for three kills, got down for a pair of digs and
registered two blocks. Senior outside hitter Nancy
Shrodes (Manhattan Beach, CA) chipped in with six kills, four
digs and a block assist, while junior libero Audrey Kuan
(Los Altos, CA) came up with 17 digs and served up an ace.
The Beacons will be in action again on Tuesday, October 5 when
they host Little East Conference foe University of Southern Maine
at 7:00 pm at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Jumbos travel to
Middletown, Conn. to take on Connecticut College on Friday, October
1 in an 8:00 pm match to be played at Wesleyan University.
