MEDFORD -- The Tufts University women's tennis team, ranked 10th
nationally at the end of the 2009-10 season, opened their 2010-11
dual match season with a convincing 8-1 victory against local rival
MIT on Wednesday afternoon.
Coach Kate Bayard's team swept doubles to go ahead 3-0.
Sophomore Lauren
Hollender (Newton, MA) and first year Samantha
Gann (Massapequa, NY) shut out MIT's pair in third doubles 8-0
to highlight the Tufts sweep.
In singles, Jumbos Lindsay Katz
(Baltimore, MD), Edwina
Stewart (London, ENG), Hollender, Gann and sophomore Janice Lam (San
Francisco, CA) all won easily in spots two through six,
respectively. Gann and Lam lost just one game each in their
matches.
The lone MIT win came from impressive first-year player Lauren
Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, TX), who defeated defending NCAA
singles champion Julia Browne
(Old Brookville, NY) 2-6, 7-6 (3) and 10-4 in the decisive super
tie-breaker of the #1 match.
Tufts next plays a non-conference match against Williams at
Wesleyan on October 9. MIT is next in action on Saturday when they
host a NEWMAC match versus Mount Holyoke.
