JUMBOS EDGED BY D1 BOSTON COLLEGE AT HAMILTON POOL, 206-170

Gordy Jenkins set a pool record with the 200 medley relay and recorded the fastest time in the conference in the 50 breaststroke.

MEDFORD - The #16 Tufts University Jumbos lost a close meet to Division I cross-town rival Boston College on Sunday at Hamilton Pool. The Jumbos kept the meet close throughout and had some come-from-behind races that fired up the home crowd.

The meet started with a dominating win in the 200 medley relay by the Jumbos as they set the pool record with a time of 1:35.92. The team consisted of Michael Del Moro (Pequannock, NJ), Gordon Jenkins (Kansas City, MO), E.J. Testa (Cheshire, CT), and Owen Rood (Branford, CT). It was the second fastest time in the conference.

The Jumbos kept the momentum rolling with strong performances in the 1,000 by Dylan Portelance (Redmond, WA), who came from behind in the first heat to defeat two BC swimmers, and Kyle Savidge (South Windsor, CT), who finished second in the event. Brian Canter (Willow Grove, PA) had a season best time in the 200 freestyle as he overcame a three-length lead by the BC swimmer to touch him out. Alex Strittmatter (Fairfield, CT) finished second in the 200 freestyle with a season best time of 1:47.21.

Del Moro won a close 100 backstroke with a season best time of 53.84. It was the first individual win for the Jumbos. Testa came back a few events later to win the 50 butterfly in 23.97, the third fastest time in the conference this year.

Rood and Jenkins teamed up to go 1-2 in the 50 freestyle dominating the BC swimmers from start to finish with times of 21.45 and 21.75 respectively. It is the fourth and fifth fastest time in the conference this year.

Rood teamed up with Dave Meyer (Clarendon Hills, IL) to go 1-2 in the 100 freestyle in 47.97 and 48.72 respectively. At this point the momentum had begun to shift towards the Jumbos with two straight commanding wins over the Eagles.

Del Moro and Andrew Altman (New Fairfield, CT) finished 2-3 in the 200 backstroke with times of 2:01.54 and 2:02.04. Testa won the 50 backstroke in 25.16, just off his season best time and now ranked third in the conference. Jenkins won the 50 breaststroke in 27.44, which is the fastest time in the conference this year by almost half a second. Teammate Zed Debbaut (Hood River, OR) finished second in 27.72, which ranks as the second fastest time in the conference as well.

Christian Jones (Lewisville, NC) had a Jumbo best in the 500 and came back and used a fast final 50 yards to finish second in the 200 IM in 2:01.53.

The meet ended on a high note for the Jumbos as they won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:26.89. The team consisted of Jenkins, Altman, Meyer, and Rood and was just off their conference leading time of 1:26.08.

The Jumbos have their final dual meet of the season next Saturday against Wheaton College at home. It will serve as the senior recognition meet.
