BOSTON - The Tufts University women's indoor track & field team placed 20th at the annual NEICAAA Championships - featuring New England Divison I, II and III programs - on Friday and Saturday at Boston University. Junior triple jumper Nakeisha Jones (Boston, MA) improved her NCAA qualifying mark and the 4x400 relay established a national qualifying time to lead the Jumbo effort.
Jones, rounding into form after studying abroad during the first semester, hit 38'3 1/2" (11.67m) in the triple to improve her NCAA mark. She is currently ranked seventh nationally in the event. She placed fifth at the meet, the best for the Jumbos.
The 4x4 of sophomore Alyssa Corrigan (Wellesley, MA), senior tri-captain Kanku Kabongo (Abington, MA), junior Dayorsha Collins (Boston, MA) and first year Jana Hieber (Goffstown, NH) put down a 3:55.98 on BU's banked track, which converts to a 3:57.58. The NCAA provisional cut-off is 3:59.50, and the Jumbos are currently ranked #11 in the nation. They were ninth at the meet with a time that is fourth-best all-time at Tufts.
Junior pole vaulter Heather Theiss (North Woodmere, NY) broke her own school record while just missing the provisional qualifying mark. She tied for sixth at 11'6 1/2" (3.52m), surpassing the 11'5 3/4" (3.5m) previous school mark. In the shot put, sophomore Kelly Allen (Norton, MA) hit an NCAA provisional mark of 41'10 3/4" (12.77m), but it did not improve upon her 41'11 1/2" (12.79m) from earlier this season. She was seventh at the meet.
In the 500 meters, sophomore Kaylee Maykranz (Jackson, WY) ran a career-best 1:18.11, the third-best time at Tufts for the event.
