ATLANTA - Playing at the Fab 10 Tournament featuring 10 of the top-ranked Division III teams in the country, the #8 Tufts women's tennis team took a 5-4 victory against #9 Washington and Lee on Friday afternoon at Emory University.
The Jumbos took two out of three in doubles to gain an early lead. Senior Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and first year Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) won their eighth straight match together at #1, 8-6. The Jumbo pair of Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and first year Eliza Flynn (Hamilton, MA) were 9-7 winners at the #2 spot. WLU's Sallie Griffin and Chelsea Mixson prevented the doubles sweep by winning a very competitive 9-8 (6) match at #3.
In singles, Flynn's 6-2, 7-5 victory in the #4 spot was the fifth Tufts point to clinch the match. The Jumbos also received wins from Browne at #1 (6-1, 6-1) and Katz at #3 (6-3, 6-0).
Washington and Lee won three singles matches by Lauren Lukas at #2 in a super tie-breaker, Griffin at #5 6-1, 6-1 and Catherine Reed in a super tie-breaker at #6.
The Jumbos are back in action tomorrow at 3 pm against the University of Chicago, the fourth-ranked team which defeated #2 Williams 6-3 on Friday.
