ATLANTA - The eighth-ranked Tufts University women's tennis team continued its superb start to the spring season with a rousing 5-4 victory over the #4 University of Chicago on Saturday night at the Fab 10 Tournament hosted by Emory University.
Play had to be moved indoors due to poor weather in Atlanta. With limited court availability inside, the starting time for Tufts-Chicago was delayed a few hours from 3 pm originally. The match didn't end until nearly midnight, as the contest wasn't decided until the last match on when Jumbo first year Sam Gann (Massapequa, NY) defeated Chicago's Shanelle Trail 7-5 and 7-5.
That was one of several close matches. The first singles match pitted #1 in the nation Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) against #2 Kendra Higgins from Chicago. Afer Browne posted a 6-3 win in the first set, Higgins stormed to the victory with 6-1, 6-1 wins in the second and third sets. Chicago would win the top two singles matches.
Sophomore Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and first year Eliza Flynn (Hamilton, MA) both won in three sets for the Jumbos. At #3, Katz lost 6-1 in the first set before rallying 6-2, 6-3 to win. Very similarly, Flynn was down one after a 6-1 loss and then posted 6-3, 6-4 victories to capture fourth singles.
Tufts had taken a 2-1 lead out of doubles with 8-6 victories in the second and third matches. Katz and Flynn were the winning duo at #2, and Gann with sophomore Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) won at #3.
The Jumbos improved to 4-1 with the victory. In the past week they have defeated #22 Sewanee on Wednesday, #9 Washington and Lee on Friday and #4 Chicago (10-2) on Saturday. Chicago had defeated #2 Williams - Tufts' NESCAC rival - by a 6-3 score on Friday.
Tufts finishes its stay at the Fab 10 Tournament with a match against third-ranked and host Emory on Sunday at 1 pm.
