WESTFIELD, MA - Four Tufts University throwers combined to score 51 points in four events at the Gerry Gravel Classic hosted by Westfield State University on Saturday. The Jumbo women's track & field team placed fifth at the meet behind the throwing performances.
Sophomore Kelly Allen (Norton, MA) won the discus throw and reached an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with a school record in the hammer throw. In the discus, she recorded a 137'7" (41.94m) to score 10 points for the Jumbos. She smashed the year-old hammer throw record with a 162'11" (49.67m), well beyond the NCAA provisional mark of 156'6" (47.70m). She was second in the event and erased the 150'7" (45.9m) by former teammate Julia Feltus in the record book. Allen also placed second in the shot put at Westfield State, tossing the ball 39'4 1/2" (12.00m). In all, she scored 26 points for Tufts.
Junior Ronke Oyekunle (Harvard, MA) scored in three events for the Jumbos. She was third in the shot put at 37'4 1/2" (11.39m), fourth in the discus with a 107'11" (32.90m) and sixth in the hammer throw with 127'11" (39.00m) distance.
First year Robin Armstrong (North Attleborough, MA) put points on the board for the Jumbos in the discus and the javelin. She was sixth in the discus (98'7"/30.05m) and fifth in the javelin (106'7"/32.48m). Sophomore Sabienne Brutus (Brooklyn, NY) added a fifth in the hamer throw with her best effort of 138' flat (42.07m).
The throwers scored 18 points in the discus, 15 in the hammer and 14 in the shot for the day.
The Jumbos host the annual Snowflake Classic at the Dussault Complex next Saturday.
