Top ranked Julia Browne lost just one game in the #1 singles match

MEDFORD - Moved up to #5 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll this week, the Tufts University women's tennis team flexed its muscle with a 9-0 NESCAC win over Colby College on Saturday afternoon at Voute Courts. The match was the first for the Jumbos in NESCAC play for the 2010-11 season.
The Jumbos were not challenged in any of the nine matches. While the team won all three doubles contests, the #1 pair of senior Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and first year Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) were 8-1 winners over Colby's Katie Muto and Katie Brezinski.
In singles, Tufts did not lose a set. Browne, the #1 player in the country and the defending NCAA champion, was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against Muto in the first match. First year Sam Gann (Massapequa, NY) lost just two games in the #5 match against Colby's Kathryn Vergeyle. First year Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, MA) made her collegiate debut with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the sixth match.
Tufts improved to 5-2 overall, while Colby fell to 2-8. The Jumbos play twice tomorrow at the Wellesley Invitational where they will face #18 College of New Jersey and #30 Brandeis. Colby returns home to play a NESCAC match against Trinity tomorrow.
