MEDFORD - The Tufts University women's tennis team finished its 2010-11 regular season with a 13-4 record after shutting out Bates 9-0 in a NESCAC match on Wednesday afternoon. The Jumbos now await their seed in the NESCAC Championship, the six-team tournament that begins on May 6.
The Tufts pair of sophomore Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and junior tri-captain Jennifer LaCara (Huntington Station, NY) won a tough 9-7 match at #2 doubles to help the Jumbos sweep. The top Tufts pair of senior Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and first year Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) breezed to an 8-1 victory.
In singles play, three Jumbos lost just one game while winning their matches. Browne dominated #1 6-0 and 6-1, Katz took the #2 match 6-1, 6-0 and sophomore Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) won #4 singles 6-1 and 6-0.
At 6-2 in NESCAC, the Jumbos expect to be the #3 seed in the conference championship behind Amherst and Williams. Bates, which has a match at Williams on Saturday at 10 am, will not qualify for NESCAC's with an 0-7 conference mark to go with a 4-14 overall record.
