MEDFORD - With the fourth and final home field berth into Sunday's NESCAC Championship Quarterfinals on the line, the 12th ranked Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team earned a 7-6 victory at #14 Tufts University on Friday afternoon at Bello Field.
Bowdoin (13-2, 7-2 NESCAC) ends up with the #2 overall seed and will host seven-seed Amherst in the conference quarterfinals on Sunday. Five-seed Tufts (10-5, 5-4 NESCAC) has to travel to fourth-seed Middlebury for a noon game.
The visiting Polar Bears did a good job defensively against the high-powered Jumbo attack, limiting the hosts to a season-low six goals. Bowdoin was led by a pair of goals from junior Katie Stewart (Chevy Chase, MD) and seven saves by sophomore goalkeeper Tara Connolly (Simsbury, CT).
The Jumbos trailed 3-0 early, but rallied to tie the score at 5-5 in the second half before Bowdoin won out. The Jumbos were led by three goals and an assist from junior Lara Kozin (Suffern, NY), while senior Sara Bloom (Summit, NJ) made nine saves in goal.
Bowdoin led 3-0 after a goal by Betsy Sachs (Glenside, PA) with 9:49 remaining in the first half. A pair of goals 35 seconds apart scored by Kozin and assisted by junior Kelly Hyland (Acton, MA) pulled Tufts to within 3-2. The Polar Bears led 4-2 at the break on Stewart's first goal at 4:38 of the first half. Bowdoin controlled six of the seven draws in the first half.
After the squads traded goals in the first three minutes of the second half, consecutive Tufts tallies by Kozin at 24:21 and by sophomore Kerry Eaton (Norfolk, MA) at 21:37 made it 5-5. Stewart put Bowdoin back in the lead with a free-position goal at 12:20, and then first year Olivia King (Georgetown, MA) scored 48 seconds later for a 7-5 Polar Bear advantage.
While down a player due to a yellow card, Tufts pulled within a goal (7-6) when first year Gabby Horner (Allentown, PA) scored her second goal of the day from Kozin with 3:45 on the clock. Stewart won the draw for Bowdoin, but Bloom made a save to gain possession for Tufts. However, on that possession and on another the Jumbos turned the ball over and Bowdoin was able to run out the clock for the win.
In a defensive game, Bowdoin finished with advantages of 27-20 in shots, 14-10 in ground balls and 10-5 in draw controls. Senior Ingrid Oelschlager (Roanoke, VA) led the Polar Bears with four ground balls. Stewart had three of the draw controls, while also causing two turnovers. Senior Katy Dissinger (Upper Brookville, NY) finished with a goal and an assist, and junior Katie Herter (Topsfield, MA) had three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Jumbos Casey Egan (Massapequa, NY) and Kelly Cakert (Sudbury, MA) each had three ground balls, while Egan and Emily Pillemer (Arlington, MA) caused three turnovers each. Cakert also caused two turnovers.
