Two early goals by sophomore Kaitlyn Leidl helped Tufts take a 9-0 lead

MEDFORD - The #12 Tufts University women's lacrosse team won its fifth straight game on Tuesday afternoon, 15-4, against local rival Babson College in a non-league game at Bello Field.
The Jumbos got three goals apiece from juniors Kelly Hyland (Acton, MA), Lara Kozin (Suffern, NY) and Casey Egan (Massapequa, NY). Both Kozin and Egan also had two assists for five-point games. Tufts improved to 6-2 overall.
Babson, which dropped to 3-7 overall following its fourth consecutive loss, was led by two goals off the bench from first year Ashley Martin (Silver Spring, MD).
The hosts scored the game's first nine goals and never looked back. Egan and sophomore Kaitlyn Leidl (Califon, NJ) both scored twice during the Jumbos' game-opening run. Babson's Alyssa Hood (Newport, RI) put the Beavers on the scoreboard with 1:20 to go until halftime and it was 9-1 at the break.
Tufts had a 27-7 advantage in shots for the first 30 minutes.
Junior Trisha Babson (Duxbury, MA) and Martin scored the first two goals of the second half for Babson, pulling the visitors within 9-3 at the 28:22 mark. However, that momentum was stopped by three straight Tufts tallies including Hyland's free-position goal at 14:47 that made it 12-3 Jumbos.
Babson's Martin netted her second of the game at 12:30 for a 12-4 score, but Hyland scored twice during a three-goal Jumbo run that put the game into running time for the final nine-plus minutes.
The Jumbos recorded 13 caused turnovers on 30 Babson miscues, including three by Egan. Junior Stephanie Perez (East Providence, RI) scooped up a game-high five ground balls for Tufts and classmate Sterling Champion (Lighthouse Point, FL) had four. Perez added four draw controls. Senior Sara Bloom (Summit, NJ) started and made three saves in 30 minutes of goalie play, earning the victory. Sophomore Tess Shapanka (Sudbury, MA) finished up with two saves in the second half.
Babson's Babson had a game-high five draw controls, while sophomore Caroline McManus (Walpole, MA) finished with two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Senior Sarah Macary (Woodbury, CT) had 10 saves in the Babson cage, including seven in the first half.
The Jumbos finished with a 39-16 advantage in shots and 24-11 in ground balls. The Beavers won 12 of the 21 draws.
Tufts hosts a huge NESCAC game against unbeaten Trinity at Bello Field on Saturday at noon. Babson plays host to Smith College in NEWMAC action on Saturday at 1 pm.
