Sophomore Janice Lam contributed to the third doubles win

MEDFORD - In a competitive contest which featured five of six singles matches played to three sets, the #5 Tufts University women's tennis team had the upper hand in an 8-1 victory against NESAC foe and #12 ranked Bowdoin College Friday afternoon at Voute Courts.
The victory is the fourth straight for Tufts, now 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. In singles and doubles combined, Coach Kate Bayard's Jumbos have won 30 of 32 matches since returning from their spring break trip. Three of the four opponents were national top 30 teams.
Bowdoin, which had won four in a row entering today's match, dropped to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Tufts swept doubles with relative ease. The #1 pair of senior Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and first year Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) won 8-4, as did Jumbos Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and Eliza Flynn (Hamilton, MA) at #2. The third match was a tight 9-7, won by Jumbos Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) and Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA).
Browne dominated at #1 singles for the Jumbos, winning 6-1, 6-1. The other five matches were all battles, with Jumbos winning four of them. Katz won her third set at #2 6-4 for the win. Flynn stayed alive with a 7-6 (2) victory in the second set at #4, then won the match 6-4 in the third. Sophomore Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) and Gann both had 6-2 wins in the third sets at #5 and #6, respectively.
Bowdoin first year Emily Lewis scored the visitors' lone win at #3 - 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.
The Jumbos travel to Trinity College tomorrow for more NESCAC action beginning at 1 pm. Bowdoin moves on to Williams College tomorrow for a 1 pm NESCAC tilt.
