LUTHERVILLE, MD - For the first time in team history, the Tufts women's tennis team will play in the NCAA Division III Championship quarterfinals after the Jumbos posted a 5-1 victory against Johns Hopkins University in the NCAA regional final on Sunday afternoon.
The final three rounds of the NCAA Championship, beginning with the quarterfinals, will be held in Claremont, California and hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer May 24-26. The Jumbos will face either Amherst or Middlebury in the national quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 24. Those teams were playing in a regional final on Sunday at 2 pm.
In a match played at Goucher College, Tufts worked hard to take two out of three in doubles play against Johns Hopkins. The #3 Jumbo pair of first year Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) and sophomore Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA) went extra to win 9-8 (6). The #2 match was more more easily taken by Tufts' Eliza Flynn (Hamilton, MA) and Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD), 8-2. JHU's Hailey Hogan and Nandita Krishnam defeated Jumbos Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) in first doubles.
A 6-0, 6-0 victory by Gann in #6 singles put the Jumbos up 3-1. JHU's Krishnan had to retire with the lead due to a knee injury in the #2 match, giving Katz the win. Browne secured the clinching fifth win for the Jumbos at #1 with a 6-1, 6-1 score.
Tufts extended its school-record victory total to 16. Johns Hopkins' season ended with a 17-3 record.
