Sophomore Lindsay Katz was part of a #2 doubles victory for Tufts

CLAREMONT, CA - The Amherst College women's tennis team advanced to the semi-final round of the NCAA Division III Championship on Tuesday with a 5-1 victory over Tufts University in the quarterfinals played at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
The Lord Jeffs will take on Emory University Wednesday at 11 am for a spot in the 2011 NCAA title match. Tufts' season ends with a 16-6 record, a school-record for victories.
Amherst got the jump in doubles, taking two out of three matches. Lord Jeffs Jordan Brewer and Gabby Devlin made quick work of Tufts' NCAA qualifying pair Julia Browne (Old Brookville, NY) and Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) in the #1 match. The Jumbos tied the match score at 1-1 early on with an 8-5 victory in second doubles by first year Eliza Flynn (Hamilton, MA) and sophomore Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD). Amherst gained the advantage by winning at #3, where Mimi Bell and Caroline Richman took an 8-6 final over Tufts first year Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) and sophomore Lauren Hollender (Newton, MA).
In singles play, Amherst won the first three matches to finish at #3, #5 and #4 to post the 5-1 victory. Carlissa King breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 win at #3. Caroline Richman won similarly by 6-3, 6-1 scores. Tufts' Flynn took a 6-4 win in the middle set to tie the #4 match at 1-1, but Devlin won 6-2 in the third set to close out the match.
Browne at #1 and Katz at #2 were leading their counterparts in singles when play was stopped.
The Lord Jeffs improved to 19-2 on the season and 40-18 all-time in NCAA Tournament play.
Browne will begin the defense of her 2010 NCAA Singles title on Friday, while she and Bowman are also entered in the NCAA doubles tournament that will be played later in the week.
