MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Tufts University women's tennis team, seeded third in the NESCAC Championship this weekend, advanced to the semi-finals with a 5-0 win over sixth-seed Trinity College in a first round match played at Middlebury College on Friday.
The Jumbos (14-4) will take on second-seeded Williams (15-3) in the semifinals on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
Tufts took all three doubles matches against Trinity, including a 9-8 (3) win by first year Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) and sophomore Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) at #3 over Elizabeth Gerber and Senzo Maphisa. Jumbos Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and Eliza Flynn (Hamilton, MA) were the first match off in an 8-1 victory.
The Jumbo lead grew to 4-0 in singles play when Flynn was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Kelsey Semrod at #4. The match was later clinched by first year Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX), when she topped Jillian Steckloff 6-3, 6-3 in the #3 slot.
The Jumbos had taken the first set in the four other singles matches as well when play was stopped.
This is the fourth straight season that fifth-ranked Tufts has played into the NESCAC semi-finals. The Jumbos are trying to advance to the NESCAC final for the first time since the conference tournament went to a six-team format in 2006.
