MEDFORD - Junior Alyssa Von Puttkammer (Park City, UT) set up two goals and the Tufts defense shut down the Keene State attack as the Jumbos earned a 2-0 victory against the Owls in non-league women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.
Tufts had a 10-1 advantage in shots for the first half and took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute. Von Puttkammer sent a pass through the defense and Jumbo senior Alix Michael (Mercer Island, WA) was able to get past the Keene keeper to boot in an easy goal.
Senior Megan Dempsey (East Weymouth, MA) made five saves in the Owls' net during the first 45, while Tufts sophomore Kristin Wright (Austin, TX) stopped one shot.
Early in the second half, the Jumbos had a quality chance when Von Puttkammer lofted a corner kick into the box. Tufts had a few attempts at the ball, but couldn't get it on net. Keene's best opportunity of the game came in the middle of the second half when sophomore Hayley Kenyon sent a ball to the far post that both Jessica Berthiaume (Worcester, MA) and Kara Pavlidis (Lee, NH) came upon, but couldn't strike. Dempsey made a diving stop on a shot by Jumbo senior Olivia Rowse (Falmouth, ME) at the other end of the field.
Maintaining a one-goal lead while controlling play, the Jumbos added an insurance tally off of another strong corner kick by Von Puttkammer. Keene couldn't clear it and Tufts sophomore Anya Kaufman (Evergreen, CO) was positioned in front to score in the 78th minute.
Tufts finished with advantages of 19-3 in shots and 5-0 in corners. Dempsey recorded eight saves and Wright finished with two. Von Puttkammer, who scored a goal against Middlebury in the season opener, has four points in the first two Tufts games.
The Jumbos improved to 1-0-1 overall and remained unbeaten against Keene State (2-0-1) over the past three seasons. Tufts entered the game ranked seventh in New England while Keene State (2-3) was tied for 10th.
Tufts continues a four-game homestand with a NESCAC game against Welsyean on Saturday at noon. The Owls open their home season on Saturday with a Little East game against UMass Boston starting at 1 pm.
