Desen Ozkan rallied from down two games to win her Haverford match
|
AMHERST/NORTHAMPTON - The Tufts women's squash team completed its weekend at the Pioneer Valley Invitational by splitting matches against Haverford and Connecticut College on Sunday. The #21 Jumbos shut out #32 Haverford 9-0, but lost 6-3 to #23 Connecticut College.
The win over Haverford was more challenging than the final score indicates. Tufts had to win four matches in five games and another in four games. Most impressively, junior Desen Ozkan (Istanbul, Turkey) was down two games in her #8 match, then rallied to win three straight and take the match. Both junior Ushashi Basu (Darien, CT) at #5 and junior Caitlin Doherty (Topsfield, MA) at #7 trailed 2-1 before winning the final two games. Jumbo junior Hafsa Chaudhry (Westwood, MA) went up 2-0, lost the next two and then won the fifth 15-13 at #6. The four-game win came from junior Jessica Rubine (Cranston, RI) at #1.
The Connecticut College match was also close. Senior #2 Mercedes Barba (New York, NY), first-year #4 Ann Bellinger (Arlington, VA) and senior #5 Alyse Vinoski (West Hartford, CT) all won three-game matches for Tufts. Barba's win was most convincing, allowing 18 points to her opponent. Basu lost in five games in the #6 match, while three other Jumbos lost in four.
The Jumbos are now 6-6 overall and play at the Maine Robin next weekend.
