MEDFORD - Second-ranked Emory University out of Atlanta finished a three-match swing through New England this weekend with a 7-2 victory at #13 Tufts on Sunday at Voute Courts.
Emory led 2-1 after doubles, winning the first and second matches. Play was close in the second match, where the Eagles' Mika Padmanabhan and Brenna Kelly defeated Jumbos Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) 8-6. Tufts won the third match, as sophomore Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) and junior Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) were victorious for the fourth time in their last five matches together, 8-2.
In singles, Emory was very strong at the top of the order. Gabbie Clark, the second-ranked player in Division III, defeated Tufts first-year Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC) 6-0, 6-1. At #2, Eagle Jordan Wyle, ranked 12th nationally, won 6-0, 6-1 against #42 Katz. Zahra Dawson also had an impressive win for Emory in the third match, 6-0, 6-2.
The lone Tufts win in singles play came from sophomore Eliza Flynn (Hamilton, MA), who had a straight sets (6-4, 6-2) victory against Padmanabhan on the fourth court.
The Jumbos (6-5) are home again tomorrow afternoon when they host a NESCAC match against Bates beginning at 1 pm. Emory (12-4), which lost at Middlebury and won at Amherst also over the weekend, hosts Georgia Perimeter on Thursday at 3 pm.
