MEDFORD - Playing in unseasonably warm weather as temperatures reached 90 degrees in Greater Boston on Monday, the 13th ranked Tufts women's tennis team earned a fast 9-0 NESCAC win over Bates College at Voute Courts.
The win gave Tufts a 7-5 record overall and kept them unbeaten in the conference at 3-0. Bates, ranked 30th nationally, fell to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in the league.
In Tufts' 3-0 doubles sweep, the most competitive match was at #1 where Jumbo first-year Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC) and sophomore Eliza Flynn (Hamilton, MA) combined for an 8-6 victory against Elena Mandzhukova and Meg Andreson from Bates. Tufts' new #1 pair improved to 2-1 together.
Bates challenged the Jumbos in most of the singles matches, but the Jumbos prevailed. Junior captain Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) had a 7-5 second-set win over Mandzhukova to take the #1 match. Sophomore Jumbo Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) won the #2 match on a second-set tie-breaker. Tufts sophomore Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) had a 7-5 first-set final in her sweep on the fourth court. Jumbo Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, MA) and Bates' Lucy Brennan decided their #5 match in a third-set super tie-breaker, won by Kimmel.
In sixth singles, Tufts junior Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) improved to 5-1 against New England opponents this spring with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Tufts plays a NESCAC match at Bowdoin on Thursday at 3:30 pm. Bates plays in-state rival Colby that day at 4 pm.
