AMHERST - The third-ranked Amherst women's tennis team picked up its third consecutive win with a 7-2 victory over #13 Tufts University on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Lord Jeffs improved to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in league play, while the Jumbos fell to 7-8 (3-3 NESCAC) on the year.
Senior Laura Danzig (Allendale, NY) and sophomore Gabby Devlin (McLean, VA) led Amherst in doubles action, earning an 8-3 decision over junior Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Shelci Bowman (Dallas, TX) in the top slot, while sophomores Zoe Pangalos (New York, NY) and Jennifer Newman (Haverford, PA) upended Jumbos Samantha Gann (Massapequa, NY) and Janice Lam (San Francisco, CA) 8-2 at second doubles. Junior Caroline Richman (Pacific Palisades, CA) and first-year Safi Aly (Edmond, OK) rounded out the Jeffs' doubles sweep, securing an 8-3 win over first-year Sophie Schonfeld (Washington, DC) and Rebecca Kimmel (Longmeadow, MA).
Danzig headlined singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Katz, while Newman bested Schonfeld, 6-2, 6-3. Richman earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Bowman, while Gann notched one of two Tufts points with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Pangalos at fourth singles.
Aly outlasted Kimmel 6-3, 7-6, in the five spot, while Lam held her own at the bottom of the Jumbo order, downing senior Kimberly Snyder (Newton, MA), 6-1, 6-2.
On Saturday, the Jumbos are at Middlebury beginning at 2 pm. Amherst returns to action on Sunday when they play host to Wesleyan.
